Chomh maith leis sin labhair Stiofáin Ó Deoráin ón nGúm faoin seirbhís íontach http://www.focal.ie/ agus (hallelujah!) faoin rud go bhfuil siad ar tí leagan nua-aimseartha de Gléacht a éisiúnt roimh Nollag. Tá a fhios agamsa céard tá Dadaí na Nollag ag tabhairt chuig oifigí Gaelport i mbliana. Cloisim sibh ag rá "Céard sa diabhal is Gléacht ann?" Aon duine a bhfuil an leagan MS-DOS den bhogearra seo tuigfidh siad mo ríméad. Is leagan idirghníomhach é de Foclóir Uí Dhónaill. Tá sé inchuardaithe agus is féidir gach leagan de gach focal a aimsiú (bíodh sin tuiseal, aimsir nó leagan den bhfocal mar is cuí) trí chliceáil luiche.
Ag an ócáid céanna labhair Carmel Nic Eoin atá i gceannas ar an Seirbhís Tacaíochta Dara Leibhéal don Ghaeilge san Ionad Oideachais in Áth Luain. Is seirbhís nua é seo atá curtha ar fáil ag an Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaíochta chun tacú leis na múinteoirí agus iad ag cur na n-athruithe i leith curaclam na Gaeilge, ina measca na marcanna breise don bhéaltriall, i bhfeidhm.
Labhair Julian de Spáinn ó Chonradh na Gaeilge agus Orla Nic Suibhne ó Sheachtain na Gaeilge freisin.
Deis íontach a bhí ann do ionadaí ó na heagraíochtaí Gaeilge aithne a chur ar mhúinteoirí an cheantair agus vice versa.

gaelscoileanna ar fud na tíre: díomá agus éadóchas
Seo nasc do scéal sa Mayo News mar gheall ar an gcinneadh
'A recent announcement by Education Minister Mary Hanafin that gaelscoileanna will be compelled to formally teach English has been met with dismay by people in Mayo who are involved in educating through Irish. Mary Hanafin announced on July 26 last that from January 1, 2008 all gaelscoileanna must teach a minimum of two-and-a-half hours of English per week. At present many gaelscoileanna teach through Irish only for the first few years of a child’s education and introduce English after it is felt the children have grasped the Irish language. This is known as immersion education and the Minister’s fear is that it is having an adverse effect on the English language among children in infant classes.'

Fuaim agus Fís
'Its incredible that the fifth radio round is now open under the BCI’s Sound & Vision scheme. The fund takes a 5% slice of the TV licence fee and puts its into a central fund from which all broadcasters, in radio and TV, can benefit. As an independent radio and TV production with a strong digital and online life we’ve made good use of it and to date we’ve received three radio grants, two for Newstalk and one for RTE Lyric FM. We’ve also received a major TV production grant for a series on women athletes in Ireland. Ireland is unusual in creating such a fund which seeks to support public ethos programming both within RTE and commercial broadcasters. It has widened the scope for independent programme makers to find good homes for their ideas and content and it has ensured, already, that Irish audiences get a wider range of programming'

Cath Focail a sheachaint maidir leis an nGaeilge
Here we go again. Look, let's leave the age old political arguments aside. Why should we bother with the Irish language? Tourism, that's why.
We don't have any other industry worth talking about, nor will we, being situated on the outskirts of Europe, with other remote regions having jumped on the hi-tech bandwagon years ago, leaving the backward looking Northern Ireland politicians sitting on their clouds of self-indulgence.
From a linguistic point of view, the Irish language has a universal appeal, stemming from one of the earliest branches on the Indo-European language tree. In terms of education, a little knowledge of Irish helps explain a lot of the reasons behind, for example, the quirks in the Northern Ireland English dialect.
Come on, folks. How is this country ever going to move on if you old codgers stick your necks out repeatedly to whinge and moan? And yes, stick Ulster Scots on the agenda too. Let's celebrate our rich and varied heritage and, just as importantly, try to market it at tourists rather than turn it into some war of words.
JOHN LAVERTY London
Leagan Gaidhlig Harry Potter á lorg
'As English speakers enjoy the new Harry Potter book and film, language activists in Scotland have renewed calls to have the popular series of books translated into Gaelic.
The books have already been published in over 50 languages. These have included major world languages, languages such as Irish and Welsh, as well as Latin and Ancient Greek.
Following a well publicised campaign, publishers Bloomsbury indicated that they intended to produce a Gaelic version of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone by Christmas 2006. Plans were subsequently dropped, however, with difficulty in finding suitable translators being cited as a reason.
The advent of the final book in the Harry Potter series has inspired language activists to renew their campaign. Both the national Gaelic development agency Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Alasdair Allan, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Western Isles, have written to the publishers asking for the production of "Harry Potter agus Clach an Fheallsanaich". “This has left many fans in Scotland who wish to read Harry Potter in their native language disappointed," said Mr. Allan. The fact the books had been translated into two other Celtic languages, Irish and Welsh, made it "even more surprising".
While Bloomsbury currently maintain that they have no plans to publish Harry Potter in Scottish Gaelic, pressure is set to continue on the company. Activists are hoping that their campaign will be aided by the fact that author J.K Rowling is based in Scotland and that the Scottish Highlands feature so prominently in the Harry Potter films. They are also urging the publishers to remember that Harry himself is a member of linguistic minority, being one of the few humans able to converse with snakes in their own language.'

Eilifint Mhór sa seomra
Ábhar iontais dom Comhdháil Náísiúnta na Gaeilge a bheith cáinte in eagarfhocal Lá Nua 18 Iúil toisc go bhfuil muid - mar lárchomhairle 23 eagras deonach Gaeilge - ag seasamh an fhóid maidir le feidhmiú iomlán Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla ó dheas.
Más "dearcadh stálaithe seanfhaiseanta" atá léirithe againn san obair seo, níor mhaith liom an léirmheas a ndéanfaí orainn dá dtabharfadh muid droim láimhe le feidhmiú an Achta a shamhlú!Molann Lá Nua éirí as fógraí Gaeilge sna meáin Bhéarla - rud ab ionann i gcoitinne agus an Ghaeilge a ruaigeadh ar fad as a bhformhór - agus gur sna meáin Ghaeilge amháín a bheadh fógraíocht trí Ghaeilge.
Céard faoi sin mar bhealach chuig normalú na teanga - an Ghaeilge a chúngú isteach ina 'ghetto' beag féin? Agus táimid ag iarraidh ag an am céanna ar gach rannóg den Státchóras seirbhís iomlán Ghaeilge a chur ar fáíl dúinn; ní thagann atá molta ag Lá Nua leis an aidhm sin. Ba mhaith linn uilig nach gcuirfí airgead Stáit amú agus aontaimid nach bhfuil a leordhóthain á chaitheamh ar an dóigh ceart ar athréímniú na Gaeilge. Tacaímid uilig le mian Lá Nua agus na meáin Ghaeilge eile go bhfaighidis sciar níos fearr den airgead atá le caitheamh ag an Stát ar fhograí ach níl ciall lena atá molta san eagarfhocal seo.
Tagrann an t-eagarfhocal do na meáin Bhéarla "a bhíonn de shíor ag ionsaí phobal na Gaeilge faoi stádas na teanga" ach tagann go leor soncanna freisin ó na meáin Ghaeilge ar uaire agus ní miste sin ar mhaithe le díospóireacht agus daonlathas - agus, ar ndóigh, ainilís chiallmhar a dhéanamh ar na "hEilifint Bhána" uilig.

out here in front of a tiny audience
of halfhearted seals applauding
It is almost obligatory when talking about Scots Gaelic to begin with a number. In 2001 it was 58,652. Writing ten years ago, you would have got to bandy about a bigger figure – 65,978; in 1911, the heady – and bafflingly precise – heights of 202,398. These are, of course, the numbers of speakers of Scots Gaelic, according to the relevant census figures. Given this starting point, the number of readers of Gaelic poetry is not exactly gargantuan. When challenged, Sorley MacLean – the greatest Scots Gaelic poet of the twentieth century – denied that the number of people who could read his poetry in the original was less than forty; however he did grudgingly admit that his readership was “limited”. And one of the dangers of having such a “limited” audience is that, like the halfhearted seals in Robert Crawford’s translation of a poem by Fearghas MacFhionnlaigh, they will applaud almost anything. Bunteanga na tíre
Ní féidir argóint leis sin!"Caithfear anailís a dhéanamh ar áit na Gaeilge i saol an ghasúir, agus ar na bealaí a mhéadófaí ar thábhacht na Gaeilge dó. Cuirimis an cheist orainn féin, cén fáth an bhfoghlaimeodh Éireannach (óg nó aosta) teanga?
Cén fáth an gcuirfeadh Éireannach dua air an teanga sin a fhoghlaim go maith? Más féidir saol iomlán Éireannach a chaitheamh trí Bhéarla, cén chúis a bheadh ag duine le Gaeilge in aon chor? Níl aon chúis ann, muna bhfuil nithe ar fáil sa teanga sin nach bhfuil ar fáil i mBéarla.
Agus cad iad na nithe san? Is cinnte go bhfuil saibhreas sa Ghaeilge a bhaineann go dlúth le hÉirinn nach bhfuil ar fáil (fós) i mBéarla. Tá na hamhráin ann, agus is beag baile beag in Éirinn nach bhfuil luaite in amhrán éigin.
Tá na seanscéalta ann, scéalta as an tseanlitríocht (an Rúraíocht, an Fhianaíocht, Scéalta na Ríthe, agus mar sin de) agus scéalta béaloidis. Arís, is beag baile beag in Éirinn nach bhfuil luaite i scéal éigin. Agus sin é ár mbua: is í an Ghaeilge seanteanga bhunaidh na hÉireann, is inti atá cur síos le fáil ar ár stair, ar ár muintir, ar ainmneacha ár mbailte, ár n-aibhneacha is ár sléibhte. Guth aontaithe ag Pobal na Gaeilge ar éilimh
Ag an gComhdháil Lae Do Ghaeilge & Do Vóta inné, 27.02.2007, a d'éagraigh Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, dhírigh na cainteoirí agus an lucht éisteachta isteach ar cheisteanna reachtaíochta, oideachais, pleanála, ar thógáil pobail agus ar cothú Gaeilge i measc na hóige.
I measc na n-éileamh a d'aontaigh pobal na Gaeilge inné bhí:
- Go mbeadh réamhscolaíocht stáit sa Ghaeltacht i nGaeilge agus taobh amuigh de Ghaeltacht dóibh siúd gur mhaith leo sin; go mbeadh an Ghaeilge tógtha san áireamh i réamhscoileanna eile
- Go mbunófar ionad náisiúnta oideachas don Ghaeilge
- Go dtacóidh na polaiteoirí le Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla i ngach gné den saol poiblí agus go gcuirfidh i bhfeidhm i gceart é
- Go dtacóidh na polaiteoirí le hAcht Teanga do Thuaisceart Éireann
- Go ndréachtfar agus go gníomhofar plean stráitéiseach don Ghaeilge ina mbeadh struchtúr náisiúnta don óige mar phríomh-chuspóir

Seisiún na bPolaiteoirí ar tí tosnú
Stádas na Gaeilge agus An Ghaeilge sa Phobal
Ní comórtas naísiúnta amháín atá i gceist le Glór na nGael: is coistí atá ag feidhmiú ar bhonn deonach chun an Ghaeilge a cothú go háitiúil. Bíonn meascán leathan de imeachtaí agus tionscnaimh curtha ar siúl ag na coistí seo.
An bhfuil sé realaíoch go mbeidh na coistí seo ag feidhmiú gan tacaíocht? Gan an obair dheonach seo ní bheadh Gaeilge chomh fairsing ach gan tacaíocht lán-aimseartha atá maoinithe i gceart conas is féidir leo tionchar a imirt ar chomlachtaí agus eagraíochtaí eile AGUS ábhar agus imeachtaí a chur ar fáil don bhfoghlaimeoir agus cainteoir Gaeilge.
Ní leor na hacmhainní atá curtha ar fáil ag Foras na Gaeilge do scéimeanna pobail.
Caithfear tacaíocht airgid ceart a chur ar fáil do na coistí bunaithe scoileanna nua. Tá an eagla ann go mbeidh monaplacht ag na coistí gairmoideachais ar scolaíocht iarbhunscoile agus ní féidir leis na coistí beaga gabháil in iomaíocht leo.

Go gcuirfí brú ar rialtas na Breataine glacadh le Comhaontas Cill Rímhín
Chuir an cathaoirleach ceist ar na toscairí an bhfuil siad sásta tacú le moltaí POBAL faoi Acht Teanga don tuaisceart agus dúradh go raibh.
Stádas na Gaeilge agus An Ghaeilge sa Phobal
Léargas ar staid na Gaeilge sna Gaeltachtaí agus na breacghaeltachtaí.
Má thiteann líon na gcainteoirí faoi 70% deireann na saineolaí má shroicheann sé an léibhéal seo, titeann sé in iomlán. Idir 1996 agus 2000 tharla sleamhnú suantasach i nGaeltachtaí Conamara agus Tír Chonaill. Caithfear súil a choiméad ar léibhéal na Gaeilge go háirithe nuair atá tógáil eastát tithíochta molta i gceantar
Conas is féidir an Ghaeilge a chosaint?
- Reachtaíocht
- Cur i bhfeidhm na reachtaíochta (go háirithe ag an údarás áitiúl - m.sh. tá forálacha teanga ag Comhairle Chontae na Gailimhe ach tá amhras air an bhfuil siad a chur i bhfeidhm.)
- Treoirlínte bunaith ar an Acht Pleanála
- Teorann na Gaeltachta a shocrú
- Polasaí dearfach a mhealladh na geallsealbhóirí uile
- Údarás Pleanála don Ghaeltacht
- Áisínteacht Timpeallacht Teanga don Ghaeilge
An Ghaeilge sa Chóras Oideachais

Caithfear tacú le hionad náisiúnta ar son na Gaeilge i mBaile Bhúirne agus sin príomh-éileamh Eagraíocht na Scoileanna Gaeltachta.
An Ghaeilge sa Chóras Oideachais
Rinne siad plé le na sprioc ghrúpaí uile: daltaí scoile, múinteoirí, tuismitheoir, saineolaí srl. Is polasaí comhtháite atá ann toisc go bhfuil gach rud fite-fuaite le chéile. Is féidir an polasaí in iomlán ar fáil ag www.cnag.ie. Tá tacaíocht léirithe ag an-chuid grúpaí óige leis an bpolasaí seo. Tá an Chomhaontas Glas ag tacú leis an bpolasaí cheana féin.

Irish translation will start in DGT with a team of five translators. Recruitment is a big challenge as the translator market is limited and the Irish authorities also need recruits. Nevertheless, on 1 January 2007 one translator, one assistant and one manager were in place. A second translator started at the beginning of February while a third should start work soon. It is expected that the final two translators will be in place within the next few months, at which time the unit will be up to full strength.
The competition for Irish-language translators yielded 19 successful candidates on the reserve list."

Why International Mother Language Day?
Linguistic and cultural diversity represent universal values that strengthen the unity and cohesion of societies. The recognition of the importance of linguistic diversity led to UNESCO ’s decision to celebrate International Mother Language Day.
When was it launched?
The 30th session of the General Conference of UNESCO in 1999 decided that the Organization would launch and observe an International Mother Language Day on 21 February every year throughout the world."

Suíomh na Gaeilge
Seo mar a sheasann rudaí (in ord aibítir)
An Comhaontas Glas - cé go dtugtar "The Green Party/ An Comhaontas Glas" orthu féin síos tríd an suíomh in iomlán, níl, de réir an tsuímh, polasaí ar leith faoin nGaeilge ag an bpáirtí seo. Tháinig mé ar an abairt seo mar chuid den bpolasaí Ealaíon agus Cultúr "Supporting traditional arts and arts/culture/heritage ventures in languages other than in English is seen by the Green Party as part of an Arts Council Brief to support and sustain cultural diversity. As we believe that the Irish Language is central to Irish identity we recommend that the Department of the Gaeltacht should have a separate department too."
Fianna Fáil - Cé go bhfuil Gaeltacht Affairs le feiceáil ar an líosta polasaithe nuair a bhuailtear isteach ann níl aon polasaí leagtha amach - níl ann ach liosta preas ráitisí agus foilsíodh an ceann deireanach i Mí na Samhna seo chaite.
Fine Gael - Arís tá cuid ar leith den suíomh ina féidir polasaithe an pháirtí a scrúdú agus áit ar leith den Ghaeilge. Ach nuair a dhíritear isteach ar Ghnóthaí Pobail, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta is preas ráitis atá ann arís in ionad cáipéis polasaí. Agus is i Mhí Bealtaine 2006 a foilsíodh an ráiteas deireanach faoin nGaeilge...
An Páirtí Daonlathach - Cé go bhfuil mír ar leith ar an suíomh seo faoi polasaithe ní raibh mise abalta teacht ar aon pholasaí i leith na Gaeilge.
Páirtí an Lucht Oibre - ní raibh mé abalta teacht ar aon ní faoin nGaeilge ar an suíomh. Rós mór dearg don té a chuireann sa treo ceart mé.
An Páirtí Sóisialach - ditto ach corrán in ionad rós mar dhuais.
Sinn Féin - An t-aon suíomh le rogha Gaeilge nó Béarla. Tá mír ar leith ann do pholasaithe agus do "Teanga agus Cultúr na hÉireann" ina bhfaightear achoimre ar a bpolasaithe agus na polasaithe in iomlán.
Dátaí nua ag an Oireachtas i mbliana!
Agus an bhfuil suíomh athchóirithe an Oireachtais feicthe agaibh? An-snasta agus lán go pléascadh le fís agus fuaim. Tá mé ar sceitimíní cheana féin...!

09.15 Clárú & Cupán Tae
Creideann an Chomhdháil go mór sa seanfhocal "Tús maith leath na hoibre" agus mar sin beifear ag cúr tús le himeachtaí an lae le cupán tae. Chomh maith leis sin beidh lón eadrom ar fáil díreach roimh Seisiún na bPolaiteoirí, rud a chiallaíonn go mbeidh iad siúd a bhfuil faoi brú ama nó oibre inann freastal ar an seisiún lóin amháin agus difríocht a dhéanamh. GheofarDréachtchlár an Lae ar Gaelport.com
But, are you happy?
Sin an ceist a chur clár fógraí ar thaobh na bóithre orm ar maidin. Cuid de feachtas fógraíochta Pháirtí an Lucht Oibre agus muid ag druidim níos gaire le olltoghchán chuile lá (ar eagla go bhfuil dearmad déanta agat...!). Bhuel caithfidh mé rá gur chuir sé droch spion ceart orm ar maidin! Ceann de na cúiseanna is mó díomá atá orm féin le cúpla bliana anuas ná cé chomh deacair is atá sé clann a thógáil le Gaeilge. Roimh ar rugadh iad níor thuig mé an dúshlán a bhí romhaim. Labhraim Gaeilge an chuid is mó den lá, bímse ag smaoineamh i nGaeilge an-chuid is ar éigean go mbím ag taibhreamh i nGaeilge!
Agus in ainneoin an sár-obair atá ar siúl ag a leithéid de Comhluadar (féach m.sh. deireadh seachtaine atá beartaithe acu i mí Mhárta. Tuilleadh eolais eolas@comhluadar.ie nó 01 6715116) is é an bhunfhadhb atá agamsa ná ní chaithim a dhóthain ama leis na gasúir agus nuair atá mamailíneach ar tí titim síos staighre déanfaidh tú cinnte go dtuigtear thú agus is cuma céard iad do phrionsabail!
Is cuimhin liom nuair a bhíomar ag cuardach créche dóibh, dúradh linn in áit amháin gur créche dá-theangach a bhí ann. Léim mo chroí! "Céard iad na dteangacha?" a d'iarr mé. "Béarla agus Fraincís," a dúradh liom.
Mar sin ceann de na ceisteanna a gcuirfidh mise ar na hiarrthóirí ar 27 Feabhra ag an gComhdháil Lae ná conas a gcabhróidh sibh liomsa clann a thógáil le Gaeilge?
Dé Céadaoin, Feabhra 14, 2007
Páidí i mbun na gCeisteanna
Beidh Páidí Ó Lionáird láithreoir aitheanta Seacht Lá agus Ardán TG4 sa chathaoir do sheisiún na bpolaiteoirí ag an gComhdháil Lae atá a eagrú ag Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, in Óstán Alexander, Baile Átha Cliath 2, ar an 27 Feabhra 2007.
Dé Máirt, Feabhra 13, 2007
Nocht bhur dtuairimí, inis dúinn bhur mianta!
Nó céard faoi cúrsaí pleanála sa Ghaeltacht?
Agus cúrsaí craolacháin agus Bille Craolacháin ag gabháil tríd an Oireachtas faoi láthair?
So let's hear what you think, tell us what you want! What about Irish in school? Should we extract promises from the candidates about school resources? Or what about Irish beyond the classroom? What can the politicians do to support those who want to develop their Irish after post-primary?
What about planning issues in the Gaeltacht?
And broadcasting issues while a broadcasting bill makes its way through the Oireachtas?
An Ghaeilge & Do Vóta/ Your Language, Your Vote

Clár iomlán ar fáil anseo/ Complete programme available here
Ach tuigtear dúinn nach mbeidh sé ar chumas chuile dhuine gur spéis leo an Ghaeilge a bheith i láthair ar an lá agus mar sin tá mise, thar ceann na Comhdhála, ag cur tús le plé ar an ábhar seo ar an mblag seo agus ar www.politics.ie
However we know that not everyone who is interested in the Irish Language will be able to make it on the day and so I am, on behalf of An Chomhdháil, kicking off a discussion on this subject on this blog and at www.politics.ie
Ar an lá cuirfear ceist nó dhó ar gach ábhar ón bplé ar líne. Tá súil againn dá bharr go dtabharfaidh sé seo deis do chách a dtuairimí a nochtadh. Tá mé ag súil go mbeidh mé inann beo-bhlagáil a dhéanamh anseo ón gcomhdháil ar an lá freisin.
On the day one or two questions will be asked from the online discussion on each topic. We hope therefore that this will give everyone a chance to get their voices heard. I also hope that I will be able to liveblog here from the conference on the day too.
